Majin Privacy Policy
Majination Labs LLC (“Majination Labs”, “we”, “us”) makes the Majin app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch (“Majin”). This policy explains what information Majin handles, where it goes, and the choices you have. We wrote it to be read, not skimmed past.
The short version
- Your books, audiobooks and reading happen on your device. We don’t upload the books you import.
- Your library, rankings and reviews sync through your own iCloud account, which Apple operates. We can’t read your private iCloud data.
- If you use social features, the profile and rankings you choose to publish are visible to other Majin users.
- We don’t sell your information, we don’t show ads, and we don’t track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
What stays on your device
Books, audiobooks and documents you import, your reading positions, highlights and notes, narration, generated illustrations, and the analysis Majin does of a book (such as character lists) are processed and stored on your device. Some of this processing uses Apple’s on-device models and, where Apple routes a request there, Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, which Apple designs so that your data isn’t stored or made accessible to Apple.
What syncs through your iCloud account
If you’re signed in to iCloud, Majin stores your library (titles, authors, shelves, dates), rankings and comparison history, series rankings, reviews and verdicts, want-to-read list, reading progress and app settings in your private iCloud database so they’re available on your other devices. Apple processes this data under its own privacy policy. Majination Labs can’t access your private iCloud database.
Information you choose to share
Majin’s social features are optional. If you sign in with Apple and use them:
- Profile. The display name you choose is published so friends can find you. Sign in with Apple gives Majin an anonymous identifier, and your name only if you choose to share it; we never receive your Apple Account password.
- Published rankings. If you publish your rankings, your ranked list of books (titles, authors and scores) is visible to Majin users who follow you.
- Follows and comments. Who you follow, and comments you post inside a book, are stored in Majin’s public iCloud database so the people involved can see them. Comments are shown only to readers who have reached that point in the book.
- Contacts matching. If you choose to find friends from your contacts, Majin compares names on your device against public Majin profile names. Your contacts list is not uploaded.
You can unpublish your rankings, delete your comments, block other users, and change or remove your public profile at any time in the app.
Information from other services
- Goodreads. If you give Majin a link to your public Goodreads profile, Majin reads your public shelves and ratings from Goodreads to import your library. We don’t ask for your Goodreads password.
- Book information. To show covers, summaries and publication details, Majin looks up books on public catalogs such as Open Library, Google Books and Wikipedia. These requests contain book titles, authors or identifiers, not information about you, though those services can see your device’s IP address as with any web request.
Cloud processing
Majin is designed to do its work on your device. We may in the future offer optional features that use cloud services, including AI models run by us or by service providers, for example to improve summaries, recommendations or narration. If we do:
- we’ll tell you in the app before a feature sends anything off your device, and say what it sends;
- we’ll send only what the feature needs, never the full text of books you’ve imported unless you explicitly ask for that feature;
- we’ll require providers to process it only to provide the feature, not to train their models on it or sell it;
- and we’ll update this policy before the feature launches.
Diagnostics
Majin can create a diagnostics report on your device (for example in Settings > Diagnostics). It’s only sent to us if you choose to share it. If you’ve turned on sharing with app developers in iOS, Apple may also share crash and performance data with us; this is controlled by your iOS settings and Apple’s policy.
What we don’t do
We don’t sell or rent your information. We don’t use advertising or third-party ad trackers. We don’t track you across other companies’ apps and websites. We don’t use your data to build an advertising profile.
Keeping and deleting your data
Data on your device is deleted when you delete it in the app or delete the app. Data in your private iCloud database can be removed in the app or in your device’s iCloud settings. Public profile data, published rankings, follows and comments are deleted when you remove them in the app. To ask us to remove public data you can’t remove yourself, email us at the address below.
You can export your library at any time from Settings and import it elsewhere.
Children
Majin isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we’ll remove it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export or delete your personal information, or to object to certain processing. Most of these you can do directly in the app. For anything else, email us and we’ll respond within 30 days.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the effective date above, and for significant changes we’ll let you know in the app before they take effect.
